PHILA’S TAO
Roman/Novel
Phila’s Tao is een roman met twee verhaallijnen, in twee tijden, op verrassende wijze met elkaar verweven. Tegelijkertijd biedt het een toegankelijke kennismaking met het gedachtegoed van het taoïsme.
Ferdinand Dinocheau, 41 jaar, leidt een stil en kleurloos bestaan als boekhouder bij een ijzergieterij in het Franse stadje Audasse. Zijn dromen zijn verdampt, zijn dagen verlopen eentonig, zijn nachten lang en eenzaam. Het is 1880. Maar dan, op een vroege ochtend, redt hij een mysterieus meisje uit handen van het kwaad. Ze heet Phila, en zij schenkt hem een oud boek. Het zet zijn wereld op zijn kop. Er ontvouwt zich een avontuur met een onmogelijke liefde, een strijd die niet te winnen valt — en de moed om het toch te proberen.
Ruim een eeuw later, in het hier en nu, valt Ferdinands dagboek in handen van Quinn Eersteling, een veertigjarige Nederlandse topadvocaat, gespecialiseerd in bedrijfsovernames. Een winnaar in zijn werk, maar verloren in het leven daarbuiten. Door het lezen van het dagboek, waarin Ferdinand zijn belevenissen beschrijft, begint er iets in hem te verschuiven.
Als je de manier waarop je naar dingen kijkt verandert, beginnen de dingen waar je naar kijkt te veranderen.
Phila’s Tao is a novel with two storylines, set across two different eras, intricately woven together in unexpected ways. At the same time, it offers an accessible introduction to the core ideas of Taoist philosophy.
Ferdinand Dinocheau, 41 years old, leads a quiet and colourless life as a bookkeeper at an iron foundry in the French town of Audasse. His dreams have faded, his days pass in dull routine, his nights are long and lonely. It is the year 1880. But then, one early morning, he rescues a mysterious girl from the hands of evil. Her name is Phila, and she gives him an old book. It turns his world upside down. An adventure unfolds, with an impossible love, a battle that cannot be won, and the courage to try nonetheless.
Over a century later, in the present day, Ferdinand’s diary falls into the hands of Quinn Eersteling, a forty-year-old Dutch corporate lawyer, specialised in mergers and acquisitions. A winner in his work, but lost in life beyond it. As he reads the diary, in which Ferdinand records his journey, something in him begins to shift.
Gradually, unexpected parallels emerge between their lives. Their experiences, and the deepening bond with two women, Céleste and Valentina, each on a path of her own, begin to transform them. Ferdinand and Quinn discover the life they truly want to live. And they each find an answer to the question that connects them across time and distance: Who do I want to be?
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at begin to change.
KING OF CLOUDS

At immense personal risk, 32-year-old Swedish businessman Raoul Wallenberg saved tens of thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary during the final months of the Second World War. When the Soviet army entered Budapest, Wallenberg was arrested and taken away. He disappeared into the Russian prison system, locked in solitary confinement. No government, no institution, not even his powerful family, made a true effort to bring him back. He was left to perish.
King of Clouds is a philosophical novel inspired by true events. It is my imagined account of Raoul Wallenberg’s final five days. In 1977, after 32 years of total isolation, Wallenberg is told his life will end in five days. As time runs out, he struggles to come to terms with the brutal reality of his life’s path. We witness a confrontation on the razor’s edge, with the ghosts of his past. Reason and conscience collide. Healing rises from regret. And courage and love reveal their purest form.
